The Resolutes!

Faster than a speeding justification for bad behavior. Able to leap to self-destructive conclusions in a single round of drinks. They're absurd. They're lame! They're the Resolutes!

Hearing New Year's Resolutions from someone else is a little like them telling me all the details of one of their dreams: a complete lack of perspective. Unless the person is very close to me the dreams (and the resolutions) cannot possibly be fully understood or given the proper amount of empathy.

I can pretend, of course. I can say the right words, type the correct responses, wish the resolutes well.

I might even quote a little Ben Franklin:

"Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. "

or try to be cute and go the Oscar Wilde route:

"Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account."

The options are fairly endless.

But it all leaves me feeling false.

So, this year, I'm coming at it a little differently.

First, I'm not going to list my resolutions for all the world to see. They are mine. And I really don't think you want to hear about them anyway.

You're welcome.

Second, I wish you all the best in your 2011! If I don't reply directly to your resolution blog post/Facebook update/Tweet, etc. it's because I don't want to be false. But I really do wish you well.

Hmm... I guess this post is sort of a resolution in itself. I just told you all something I'm doing differently this year.

Kind of a paradox.

Sorry about that.

Cheers,

Casey

P.S. - Let's kick some ass this year, shall we?

  1. totally agree about the airing of the resolutions...

they're a lot like looking at pictures of someone's vacation..unless I'm in them or someones naked I'm really not interested :)

Have a great 2011, and thanks for the smiles and chuckles in 2010

I have had a 'New Year' draft post on the back burner for days - I suspect I am hesitating for similar reasons.

    Have a great year!

  3. I'm still deciding if I'll go the Resolution route this year or not-- They're basically the same ones year and and year out so what's the point, right.

Hope your 2011 is kick ass fantastic! Cheers, jj

  5. I never ger it either. Every issue gets put out there on display, I am not really a fan of blogs about every bite of food you eat or every mile you run either. I mean, if that works for you : ) go for it....i just don't want to come over and comment on it all the time.

Your comment today was the nicest comment I might have ever gotten. Thank you Casey. You always say just the right thing. Wishing you a wonderful 2011.

  6. Hi dude! Super Anti-resolute you :) My NY resolution is to acquire more power in school and get more gifts on Teacher's Day. How about that?

  7. Mr. Mambang, you and your gifts! :) I still remember the pile of gifts you got last year.

Happy New year Mr. Spencer Casey. wish you'd return the wish and visit sometime, seems like those times are gone eh?

Agree with the resolution thing, only you know best, and you are the best judge of success or failure of your goals. So good luck for it all, and all the best for the next set of 365 days.

  8. Happy New Year!

I agree with you completely Spencer. I am never going to hold anyone to their resolutions so why should I have to hear about them in the first place?

Thank you again for your wonderfully kind comment.

    Take care,
    Mervat.
